HIV/AIDS Prevention Project among Clients of female sex workers in Kathmandu Valley

Community Welfare Centre (CWC)has been conducting a Strategic Behavior Communication (SBC) project for the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS/STIs among clients of female sex workers focusing on the most vulnerable segments of the population such as porters, construction workers, rickshaw/cart pullers, transport workers, street traders, small garment workers, trekking porters and other most at risk, people in Kathmandu Valley since the beginning of 2003. The project has technically and financially supported by Family Health international (FHI) from June 2003. Target groups' unions like; Porters Progress Nepal (PPN)- a union of trekking porters (Recently postponed the collaborative work), CUPEC Nepal- a central union of plumbers, electro mechanics and construction workers -NEST, a union of street traders, various unions of transport workers and others have also linked with CWC to provide HIV/AIDS/STI education to their members.

CWC has focused on SBC through outreach by mobilizing 21Community Mobilizers, 21 Peer Educators 7 Outreach Educators having Community Information Center in needs. So far, CWC has identified 18,253 clients and provided One-on-One education on behavior change and maintenance. for safer sex practice, referral services for the treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) and Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT).

Community Health Strengthening Program in Bara and Rautahat Districts

Community Welfare Centre (CWC) in partnership with Child Welfare Society (CWS), Bara worked in Child Survival (CS) project under Plan Nepal, Rautahat/Bara Program in 2003 for one year in collaboration with partner NGOs and CBOs. Since July 2004, CWC has been working independently in the same type of health related project in Rautahat District. From October 2007, with name of Community Health Promotion and Strengthening Program. The Project covers all the VDCs of Rautahat district focusing Plan working VDCs.

The overall objectives of project is to improve the health status of under five years of children and women of reproductive age by means of strengthening and enhancing the quality of health care from grass roots to the District health delivery mechanism in close collaboration with the line agencies, partner organizations and NGOs. The project aims to achieve this through the intervention in the areas of key child survival indicators like; control of diarheal diseases, pneumonia case management, maternal and newborn care and birth spacing. The program components of the project are closely interlinked on contributing for the target achievement of the entire maternal and child health. Besides, CWC has been conducting healthy school promotion program, Iodized salt promotion, role of men in reproductive health and support to child clubs.

HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, Hetauda

CWC has been conducting HIV/AIDS prevention program in Makawanpur as continuation of Comprehensive Package for PLHA. This time, financial and technical support of UNDP DFID has been recently phased out. So, the programs as planned before have been reduced according to limited budget. Also, CWC is being involved in providing resource persons for training of TOT and Orientation in HIV/AIDS and STI.

Environment related program, Hetauda

CWC has been conducting environment and forestry related programs. Several training for forest users groups / other stakeholders and district level as well as local level debate competition are being organized by CWC. Other awareness programs like rally and talk programs are also being collaboratively conducted.

Scholarship Program, Hetauda

CWC has initiated a scholarship program for poor meritorious students of Hetuda of Makwanpur district. This program has been implemented in local Bhutandevi High School. CWC in collaboration with like-minded institutions have a plan of extending the scholarship provision even for the disadvantaged children and motivated indigenous community of Chepang (one of the aborigines community of Nepal).

6.
Capacity Building Program

CWC has been organizing and also providing resource persons on STI, HIV/AIDS, Program Mapping, Child Right, Forestry and Environment related training programs.

CWC has recently signed on Long Term Agreement with UNDP for the following two projects:

a. Comprehensive Package for PLHA of Makawanpur and Rautahat Districts
b. Comprehensive Package for Migrants of Jumla, Kalikot and Rautahat Districts

So far both projects have not yet started.
